As months and years go by with only one pink line showing up, it can be a moment of heartbreak for many women struggling with infertility. Month after month and test after test, the loneliness and disappointment can be overwhelming. Infertility is a struggle women can find hard to talk about, and often wonder why me? In that lonely time, holding onto faith can be a real struggle.
It is easy in those dark times of life to forget we have a God who is always with us. When turning to the Bible, it reminds us that the same problems we are struggling with today are the same problems many women have struggled with since the beginning of creation.
Going to the Lord in prayer can be hard to keep doing when month after month you are not receiving the result you are looking for. Hannah had the same struggle. The Bible talks about the struggles she dealt with, the tears she had, and the inability to even eat. It also talks about how she had to pull herself together. Even through heartbreak and disappointment, Hannah hung on to her faith. She continually prayed to God. Through tears, she prayed.
IN HER DEEP ANGUISH, HANNAH PRAYED TO THE LORD, WEEPING BITTERLY. AND SHE MADE A VOW SAYING,
“LORD ALMIGHTY, IF. YOU WILL ONLY LOOK ON YOUR SERVANT’S MISERY AND REMEMBER ME, AND NOT FORGET YOUR SERVANT BUT GIVE HER A SON, THEN I WILL GIVE HIM TO THE LORD FOR ALL THE DAYS OF HIS LIFE.” 1 SAMUEL 9-11.
It is clear Hannah was in pain. The Bible does not say how long she waited to get pregnant, but it does say it was years. Year after year The Bible talks about the depression and loneliness Hannah dealt with. Many women are still facing those same feelings. Dealing with the heartbreak of yearning for a child of their own and not knowing when the waiting will end.
God did bless Hannah with a son in his perfect timing. Hannah gave birth to Samuel, who grew in favor of the Lord. He became a great prophet and one of the great judges of Israel. God had a plan for who Samuel would be, and Hannah’s waiting and grief did not come without a purpose. Hannah had vowed to God, she would dedicate him to the Lord, and she raised him with a strong faith and trust in the Lord.
Hannah’s trials with infertility show us it is ok to grieve. It is ok to feel the emotions that coincide with infertility. We as women are not expected to feel happy all the time, and Hannah crying out to the Lord shows us he is there to listen. Even when we feel we are alone, God hears us, God is there, and God is listening to our hearts. God heard Hannah’s heart and understood the emotions she was feeling.
Even though our trials and tribulations, when we honor God, he is faithful to us. It is through God we can experience peace and comfort in the midst of grief. Hannah’s story is a great reminder to turn to God and remember his plan for us and our children are bigger than we can imagine.
